Modak

Recipe to a yummy Modak.

Modak is Indian sweet dish made of rice flour and have stuffing mainly of jaggery and dry fruits, they are mainly steamed.
Made specially during time of Ganesh Chaturthi as a bhog to Lord Ganesha.

Ingredients

1 cup Rice flour
2 tablespoon ghee
2 pinch salt
2 cup grated coconut
1 cup gur (jaggery)
⅓ cup cashew nuts
½ tablespoon cardamom powder

Method

  • In a sauce pan or any small pot add 1 cup water, 1 tablespoon ghee and 2 pinch salt and let it come to boil on high flame. When it boils close the flame and add 1 cup rice flour and mix well then cover it with lid.
  • Now take a non-stick pan on low flame add 1 tablespoon ghee and 2 cup grated coconut and roast it for 2 minutes then add 1 cup jaggery (gur) let it melt then add chopped cashew nuts, green cardamom powder and mix together properly.
  • In the mean time remove the rice flour mixture in plate and let it cool, when it cool make the mixture smooth with palm and knead a dough from that (don't add extra water). Make lemon sized balls out of this.
  • Remove the stuffing in a plate to cool.
  • Out of this balls make round flat shape and make zig-zag on edges fill 1spoon stuffing and close it in Modal shape.
  • Heat 3-4 cup water in a steamer/ idli steamer/ dhokla steamer and grease the tray/sieve.
  • When water comes to boil and start producing steam, place modak in steamer tray and cover the lid and steam it for 20-30 minutes.
  • After 20-30 minutes switch off the fire and open lid. Gently touch your finger to Modak (dough will not stick to finger if Modak is cooked).
  • Now Modaks are ready you can garnish it with saffron water.
  • Now offer these Modaks to Lord Ganesha.
